A "Rural homestay" is a type of an accommodation facility located in the rural areas in which a person visiting or temporarily staying Lesotho lives with a family in the host community.
A homestay provides a traveller with the opportunity to stay with a selected family, interact and experience the daily life of their homestay family and learn the culture and lifestyle of the rural community in Lesotho.
A homestay is normally found in the outskirts usually near tourist attractions. Its focus is more on experience of Basotho’s lifestyle and recreational activities.
In a rural homestay the traveller shares common areas such as kitchen, toilet, dining area (if there is such). Often there will not be a bathroom at all or if a bathroom is there may not be running water within the household and in the bathroom and kitchen. Personal cooking facilities can be arranged upon booking wherein the traveller wants to cook his own meals separate from what the family is preparing.
