Highlands Ski Route

The Highlands Ski Route features world class skiing and snowboarding at the Afriski resort, 4x4 routes and snowy vistas as far as the eye can see. Don rsquo;t miss the Letseng Diamond Mine to get that special gift.

Northern Lesotho is characterized by breathtaking mountains and dramatic escarpments, gorges, passes and waterfalls. Wild and untamed, this is an area of explorers at heart whether you hike, 4 x4 or fly over the escarpment. Places to look out for are:

  • Historic: Menkhoaneng (Founder of Basotho nation, King Moshoeshoe I's birth place), Botha Bothe plateau (1st Settlement of King Moshoeshoe I)
  • Cultural: Liphofung Heritage Site, cultural performances, homestays (Mamohase B B)
  • Sightseeing: Mountain passes (, Moteng pass Tlaeeng pass (highest pass in Lesotho) Waterfalls (Tugela Tsehlanyane), Parks: Tsehlanyane National Park (eland, mountain buck Chacma baboons), rock art, Thabana Ntlenyana ndash; highest point in Southern Africa, Source of Orange river.
  • Adventure: pony trekking (Mamohase B B), fly fishing, 4 x 4, quad drives, seasonal skiing @ AfriSki ( May - August)

Lowlands Self Drive

This route allows you to take in all the historical and cultural sites of the lowlands of Lesotho. The burial place of King Moshoeshoe I and the ruins on Thaba Bosiu offer an insight into the history of the Basotho.

The lowlands route runs from western Lesotho to the south passing through 6 main towns of the Kingdom of Lesotho. History, culture and paleontological explorations are characteristic of this route. From war relics and remains of dinosaurs to living culture and fun horseback / 4 x 4 adventures, this route will both excite and enrich the visitor.

  • Historic: Thaba Bosiu Fortress, Major Bell rsquo;s Tower, Qalabane- Mafeteng (Gun war site), Morija Museum, Maeder House (Morija) Mafeteng old mill, Ellenberger cave house.
  • Cultural: Ha Kome cave dwellings, Thaba Bosiu cultural Village, mohair crafts, cultural performances
  • Sightseeing: Mountain passes (Gate of Paradise),
  • Adventure: pony trekking (Malealea, Morija), fly fishing, fossil hunting, 4 x 4, quad drives

Highlands Circular Route

The Highlands Circular Route offers a little bit of everythCliing from Qiloane Falls to the Ha Baroana rock paintings. Soak up the rejuvenating power of nature at the Bokong Nature Reserve or go boating on Katse Dam.

This route ever-changing landscapes of mountain vistas, passes and lakes guarantees adventure and exciting sightseeing. Drive through rural villages will provide close up encounters with culture and the Basotho people.

Attractions include:

  • Historic: Thaba Bosiu Fortress, Major Bell rsquo;s Tower \
  • Cultural: Ha Kome cave dwellings, Thaba Bosiu cultural village, mohair crafts,
  • Sightseeing: Mountain passes (Mafika Lisiu, Molimo Nthuse Blue Mountain) mountain lakes (Katse Mohale), Qiloane waterfall.

Quthing Valley 4x4 Route

Start at Mount Moorosi or Mphake and end the journey at Ongeluksnek, but not before you have relaxed at Malekgonyane Nature Reserve and enjoyed nearby Letseng-la-Letsio lake. Please note: Extreme 4WD vehicles only!

From the distant past of roaming dinosaurs to the enjoyable engagement with community in the Quthing valley today, this route is the epitome of rustic adventure. Attractions include:

  • Historic: Mt Moorosi Fortress, fort Hartley, Ellenberger rsquo;s cave House
  • Cultural: cultural performances ndash; Mt Moorosi chalets, homestays
  • Sightseeing: Mountain passes ('Manyemotsa, Ongulsnek), Seforong Gorge rock formations, mountain lakes (Lake Letsie)
  • Adventure: pony trekking (Mt Moorosi), 4 x 4, quad drives, Bearded / Cape vulture breeding sites, Tsatsane Homestays.

Mountain Biking / 4x4 Route

Ride or drive the Mountain Biking 4x4 Route route for breathtaking views and natural splendour. Fuel and supplies are available in Thaba Tseka and Mokhotlong Please note: Extreme 4WD vehicles only!

This route links with the highland Ski route and presents its share of dramatic landscapes and panoramic views from vantage points on the passes.

  • Cultural: village based homestays, cultural performances
  • Sightseeing: Mountain passes (Sani, Matebeng) Waterfalls (Tsoelikane), Sehlaba Thebe National Park (mountain buck, baboons, unique rock formations), rock art, mountain lakes (Katse), Thabana Ntlenyana ndash; highest point in Southern Africa.
  • Adventure: pony trekking (Thamathu, Sehlaba Thebe), fly fishing, hiking, 4 x 4, quad drives

Central Pony Trek / Hiking

This route takes you to the Maletsunyane Falls, the highest falls in Southern Africa (192m). With a section only passable by pony or hiking it makes for an ideal adventure holiday.

This route offers a truly Lesotho experience of horse riding / 4 x 4, biking adventures mixed with cultural encounters, breath taking mountain landscapes and vibrant waterfalls. Attractions include:

  • Historic: Thaba Bosiu Fortress, Morija Museum
  • Cultural: Ha Kome cave dwellings, Thaba Bosiu cultural Village, mohair crafts, cultural performances
  • Sightseeing: Mountain passes (Gate of Paradise Baboon rsquo;s passes) Waterfalls (Maletsunyane (186 m), Botsoela, Ketane, Ribaneng)

Southern Rustic Route

This route meanders through the Senqu River Valley in the south of Lesotho. Southern Lesotho is characterized by a drier, more rustic highland terrain. The route is dominated by the Orange River and boasts spectacular drives along the banks of this regionally significant river. Deep gorges, spectacular view points and panoramic mountain views are common.

  • Cultural: Homestays (Tsatsane, Mt Moorosi), cultural performances
  • Sightseeing: Gorges: Seforong, Christ King, Bearded / cape vulture breeding sites (Mphaki), Mountain lakes (Lake Letsie)

King Moshoeshoe Historical Route

The King Moshoeshoe Historical Route is a 3 day hike following in the footsteps of the founder of the Basotho (Lesotho) nation, King Moshoeshoe I, on his migratory route seeking a safer abode for his fledgling nation in Lesotho's early history.

Places to look out for are:

  • Historic: Botha Bothe plateau (King rsquo;s temporary early life sojourn), Menkhoaneng (place of birth), Pitseng cave (stop over) Lipetu (grave of the King's grandfather), Thaba Bosiu fortress.
  • Cultural: cultural performances (Ha Kome), Kome cave dwellings, Thaba Bosiu cultural village
  • Sightseeing: Mountain passes ( lsquo; lsquo;Manyemotsa, Ongulsnek), Seforong Gorge rock formations
  • Adventure: pony trekking (Ha Kome), 4 x 4, quad drives, Ha Kome Homestays.

Extreme 4x4 Route

This extreme 4WD route includes Tlaeeng Pass, which at at 3275m is the highest road pass in Southern Africa. Supplies are available at Ha Lejone. Please note: Extreme 4WD vehicles only!

This is the epitome of 4 x 4 adventure and a route that will test both the drivers off road skills and the vehicle rsquo;s mettle.

  • Sightseeing: Mountain passes (Tlaeeng ndash; highest pass in Lesotho) mountain lakes - Katse
  • Adventure: pony trekking, fly fishing and Abseiling, 4 x 4, quad drives
