Request for Expression Of Interest - Semonkong EIA

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR SEMONKONG VISITORS CENTRE

As part of tourism development in Lesotho, The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) together with the Ministry of Tourism Environment and Culture (MTEC), develops Tourism facilities at key tourist destination areas within the country.

Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) is a government parastatal established with the mandate to develop and promote tourism in the country. In view of enhancing tourism in the greater Semonkong area, LTDC intends to construct a recreational facility at the edge of the northern facing slope of the Semonkong gorge facing the Semonkong Waterfalls.

The site earmarked for the development is within a Spartial Development Area due to the Waterfall being one of the national heritage site with a steep terrain and unique biodiversity. Semonkong Waterfalls is one of the key tourism attraction sites being visited by multitudes of travellers. With the sky rocketing numbers and increasing interest in the Semonkong tourism activities, the environment is becoming increasingly threatened due to limited guided access, pathways, disposal of waste and other activities hence the need to establish a controlled access to the attraction site. As such LTDC would like to ensure the Semonkong VCF Project is subjected to an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process as stipulated in the Environment Act of 2008. The EIA process calls for assessment of bio-physical, economic and socio-cultural aspects. EIA is meant to ensure that the environmental consequences of developmental activity are understood and adequately considered in the project planning process.

Therefore LTDC herein invites interested and experienced consulting firm to submit their Expression of Interest to conduct an EIA for the Semonkong Visitors Centre. The interested consultancy firms is to submit a letter of expression of interest with a company profile,  list of completed and successful assignments with details of contact persons for obtaining testimonials, credentials of members of the team to be engaged in the assignment. It is an added advantage to be a member of the Environmental Impact Assessment Practitioners Association of Lesotho (EIPAL).
